When you go to ...You are going to have so much fun! When you go to the garment district, be sure to end up in the beading area-- it's like a subsection of the GD. The bead stores are all clustered together, for the most part.

I went bead shopping today, and poked my head into the other stores since Suma wasn't open when I got there. I have to tell you, Suma is still my favorite-- they are the friendliest you'll find, and their prices are hard to beat.

Suma deals mostly in semiprecious and natural beads (like shells and stones and things like that). They have very little glass, no seed beads, and very little metal accents. But the shopkeepers are the nicest you'll find, and are very knowledgeable about current jewelry trends! In the other stores, you'll be lucky if you're even acknowledged, or worse, they treat you like a criminal and watch you like a hawk.

If you want metal supplies, Metalliferous (spelling could be slightly off...) is THE place to go. Best prices, and widest selection.

I don't know the name of my seed bead shop, or the street it's located on, but I'll try to find that out for you, if you'd like. They have the widest selection of seed beads that I've seen-- shop owners are terribly unfriendly, unfortunately, but you won't find another store with more glass seed beads. They have every size imaginable, every color of the rainbow, and different "finishes"-- translucent, opaque, shimmery, "clear", etc. That store also has lots of fashion beads and findings, too.

...sorry, didn't mean to write a book! I just know that NYC can be a big place, and I would hate for you to waste your time (and money!) during your visit <3

I'm a little jealous-- I don't have any real-life friends who are jewelers/beaders, so I don't have anyone to go on fun trips like this with me!!!!Juliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07911443744982389298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4502351480653950734.post-88453782408266147532012-03-06T13:16:42.020-08:002012-03-06T13:16:42.020-08:00Thanks Julia, we will definitely be spending time ...Thanks Julia, we will definitely be spending time in the garment district, though I admit to no knowing Suma so I will be anxious to visit it.Marcia DeCosterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14792527019468085720noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4502351480653950734.post-19028301786938569742012-03-06T12:23:03.295-08:002012-03-06T12:23:03.295-08:00Hey there! Welcome to my playground :D I had to move out recently, but it's still "my" city at heart~

If you have time, go to Suma on 36th Street, just east of 6th Avenue. That's where I get my materials~ they carry semi-precious stones at great prices, have quite a wide selection, and the shopkeepers are all exceptionally nice.

There are a lot of stores in the area, though, so even if you don't end up at Suma there are a lot of other choices. Some stores are friendlier than others, so just be aware when you're shopping around.

It sounds like your trip will be a blast-- have fun on your beadventure! <3

(Sorry, I accidentally hit send before I was done writing, and I don't know how to edit... hence the deleted comment... technology is not on my side today!)

Sending lots of love your way,
Julia
~*~ http://beautifullywhimsical.blogspot.com ~*~Juliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07911443744982389298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4502351480653950734.post-68475228426872716662012-03-06T12:20:00.632-08:002012-03-06T12:20:00.632-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Juliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07911443744982389298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4502351480653950734.post-58157708705336295692012-03-06T11:10:00.852-08:002012-03-06T11:10:00.852-08:00The building looks amazing, no wonder you were ins...The building looks amazing, no wonder you were inspired!
