I like a bit of whimsy in my life, and these statues by Leslie Codina provide it beautifully.
This one was purchased back in July. Mark spent a lot of time thinking about engineering some kind of base so it could stand on the veranda instead of being buried in the dirt......and in the end he decided that the cement block that came with it was a fine solution and that the wind he feared probably was not a problem, and so finally it's up and it's perfect!
The second tall one will be put up in the yard today. It takes not only digging the hole, beut leveling it to within a millimeter of tolerance, at least if Mark is doing it. So it's a bit of a process, but at the end of the day I should have a second one to show you.
Today it's back to drawing beads, having taken a 'day off' to bead yesterday with newly transplanted San Diegan Phyllis. My day off did result in a new book design that came together pretty much as I envisioned it after just a little bit of design angst.
I beaded with Phyllis a few years back when she organized a Pennsylvania bead retreat. She has since moved to San Diego and once again proving what a small world it is, while discussing knitting I asked if she new the Grove. Her answer, yes my friend Gretchen took me there.....me 'I know Gretchen!' The conversation moved on and she asked me if I felted. 'Yes I have in my past, but my friend Arlene is an excellent felter' her 'I just took two classes from Arlene!'
When one is transplanted to a new area the ability to find connections, in our case through beads and fiber is very important to re-establishing one's relationships. I know when I moved to San Diego and didn't know a soul, joining the bead society was my means of connection. In fact that is where I met Arlene.
I'm off for a bit of garden work, my fifteen a minute a day commitment has slipped somewhat and there are weeds to be dealt with!
That statue is so wonderful! What a fun piece to have in your yard :)
ReplyDeleteLove the whimsy piece...
ReplyDeleteNext week I'll start a 6-week felting workshop. Hope I have to show something in the end.
I love it! Everyone needs a bit of whimsy and that statue is perfect.
ReplyDeleteLove it! It is most definitely a "knock your socks off" piece! Can't wait to see the next one. Hurry up Mark...lol.
ReplyDeleteDid I say I love it?
6 weeks of felting, you should make some wonderful things. Do you have the very excellent Dutch felting book? I got my copy at the Kerk Museum in Damn square.
ReplyDeleteIt's up Helen, picks tomorrow!
